Various literary facts indicate that Jamui was called Jambhiyagram. According to Jainism, the 24th Tirthankara Lord Mahavira attained divine enlightenment at Janghiyagram situated on the bank of the river named Ujjiuwalya.

Another place of divine enlightenment of Lord Mahavira was also revealed as “Jambiyagram” on the bank of the river Rijuwalik, similar to Janghiyagram Ujjuwaliya. The Hindi translation of the words Jambhia and Jarbikhagram is Jamuhi which in recent times has evolved into Jamui.

Over time, the Ujjawali River/Rijuwalka River is believed to have been exposed as the Ulai River still flows near Jamui. The old name of Jamui has been discovered as Jambudani in a copper plate which is kept in Patna Museum.

This plate makes it clear that in the 12th century, Jambudani was nothing but today’s Jamui. Thus, the two ancient names as Jambhiagrama and Jambubani prove that it was important as a religious place for our ancestors.
